Find an Editor for Your Fantasy Manuscript

Are you a fantasy writer seeking to polish your manuscript and bring it to its full potential? Working with a professional editor can make a significant difference in the quality and marketability of your book. But where and how can you find an editor who specialises in fantasy? Here are some helpful tips and resources to guide you in your search:

A wanted sign such as you might put up if you want an editor.

Search Directories for an Editor

Look for professional editorial associations that offer directories or resources to connect authors with qualified editors. Examples include the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). Being a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) will get you access to a lit of approved services and partner members. (I am a partner member of ALLi and an intermediate member of the CIEP so feel free to ask me about those!) These associations often have searchable databases that allow you to filter by genre and specialty, helping you find an editor experienced in working with fantasy manuscripts.

Ask a Friend

Reach out to fellow fantasy writers or writing communities and ask for recommendations. Authors who have previously worked with an editor for their fantasy manuscripts can provide valuable insights and referrals based on their personal experiences. Online writing forums, social media groups and writing conferences are great places to connect with other writers and seek recommendations.

Ask Google

A Google search can turn out an overwhelming amount of information. If you are feeling confident that you can wade through the results and be mindful of predatory companies, a web search can be your friend. You can always cross reference with directories such as ALLi.

Once you have a shortlist of potential editors, consider requesting sample edits or arranging interviews to assess their editing style, communication skills and compatibility with your writing. This will give you a better sense of their approach and help you determine if they are the right fit for your project.

Remember, finding the right editor is a crucial step in your publishing journey. Take the time to research, ask questions and review samples of their work to ensure they understand the nuances of the fantasy genre and can help you refine your manuscript into a polished masterpiece.
